This 10,000 square-foot green roof in Southwest Austin, viewable from the mezzanine seating area of Starbucks, uses the Weston GreenGrid modular system, a set of more than 1,200 2-foot by 4-foot, 8-inch-deep black plastic trays with bottoms specially molded to allow for drainage. The roof uses a palette of native plants. As the first well-known green roof in Austin, the project represented a great leap of faith for the designers and owner, and has provided not only an introduction to the concept for the Austin public, but some of the first lessons learned for the local green roof community.
